This has not always been the case, as evidenced by the horrific breaches in human research ethics outlined in the Tuskegee and Belmont reports. Researchers have an ethical and legal obligation to protect the privacy and well-being of human subject participants by offering informed consent, especially to those in vulnerable populations such as children, prisoners, and individuals in mental health care settings. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), informed consent typically entails describing the following eight study elements to participants: (1) purpose, (2) duration, (3) procedures, (4) right to decline or withdraw, (5) reasonably foreseeable factors pertinent to the decision to participate, (6) benefits or incentives, (7) confidentiality limits, and (8) contact information about rights (Walkup

Sorry for the late Wednesday post, a little behind the usual schedule due to the work tempo this week. Skarbek explains that Security Threat Groups (STG) are essentially known as prison gangs, an informal or formal group of inmates in prison. Security Threat Group is the official term used by law enforcement officials to mitigate the use of the word gang, in order to take away the power of the word “gang”, so that it is not used as recognition (Skarbek, 2011). A prison gang is an organization of inmates that is ran within the prison system. It is a group that is exclusive, where the members accepted are restricted and usually requires a lifetime commitment (Butler

This week we have been separated into two groups. I was put into the support immediate emancipation group. For this debate I will be in the point of view of a slave who has had their family ripped from them. Freedom is a got given right to every person living on earth. Immediate emancipation is the freedom me; my brothers and sisters have been waiting for. I have had everything ripped from me. My children were taken away. My whole world gone by one white man. I’ve also heard some other people talk about gradual emancipation. Have they not thought of the fact that we are the people being emancipated? All they care about are the owners. They won’t give us any real freedom if we are gradually emancipated. We won’t be able to vote, or actually be free. Gradual emancipation is not a fix to an issue that has gone on way to long. We have been used for profit for too long, and it’s time that we get the freedom we deserve without having our children serve until they are middle aged. I’ve heard that in some states those who have gotten gradual emancipation, children still have to serve as indentured servants until they are half way to 50 (First Wave of Anti-Slavery Activism 1). When slaves are legally not a slave anymore, they will still have to work without compensation, how is that a fix to this issue (First Wave of Anti-Slavery Activism 2)? I want to be free and start my own life like all the other white folk. Immediate emancipation means we all are immediately granted the rights that the white men have, gradual on the other had prolongs the time that we don’t have to have the same rights as those who own us. Everyone deciding if we should be free or not are those who own slaves. I know the answer in my heart, but those slave owners are blinded by money and power. 2. This is just the beginning. As a domestic servant, a slave, a wife, and a mother. I want nothing more than my family and I to be free. I know of slaves that work on the same plantation as me and my family that were so called free. Is that what we have to look forward to? Does being free mean I can walk amongst the white folks and live my life like them? Everyday I wake up to do my chores and what ever else master has for me side by side with my 12 year old daughter. My daughter is the product of me and my owner. The gradual emancipation law can guarantee my child’s freedom when she is a little older. For her, she has security and a chance to live a life that I could only dream of giving her. For as long as she’s here, I know she is safe. I know that she can not be sold or pulled away from me. I can watch her grow. For me, I know that I may suffer, but I will suffer and sacrifice my freedom to make sure she can live. I could run and rebel along with the other slaves, but I could die. I could be kidnapped, beaten, or sold. I could be stripped away from my family. Or, I could mind my work and obey master’s rules. Master and his Misses let me stay in the house to tend to the chores and the children. I know there is a chance that once I am older, they may kick me outside, but at least I will have my family. My child can be free and not treated as property. My child can have the chance to be smart, to learn to read and write just like the white children. My child can learn about the laws that made it “okay” to enslave me and change it.

The paraeducator, Ms. Taylor, has been working for the district for over 10 years and is approximately 25 years older than Ms. Nesser. In their first interaction, Ms. Nesser felt Ms. Taylor was not taking her seriously and seemed to disregard any suggestions she had about organizing the classroom, making comments like, “Oh, that never works!” and “That’s cute that you think the kids are going to listen!” Based on the scenario, devise a plan for Ms. Nesser to address the situation with Ms. Taylor that fosters collaboration and creates a safe, inclusive, positive learning environment. Describe your plans for Ms. Nesser in a 1,000-1,250 word narrative that includes the following: Goals for collaboration Roles and responsibilities of the teacher Roles and responsibilities of the paraeducator How communication will be conducted How supervision of the paraeducator will be handled How conflicts will be resolved Rationalize how your plan is designed to meet the collaboration goals you outlined, as well as how it engages and promotes the well-being of the students and creates a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment.

Two terms commonly used to describe an organism’s place in the environment is their “habitat” and their “niche.” A habitat is defined as an area inhabited by particular species. A niche is defined as the role (job), activities and resources used by an organism. For example, a polar bear’s habitat is the arctic whereas its niche is to swim, eat fish, walruses and seals, and to take care of polar bear cubs. Have you ever considered the characteristics of your habitat and niche or thought about what might happen if you were forced to move and occupy another habitat, and switch to another niche? This Assignment will give you the opportunity to compare and contrast your current habitat and niche with an assigned niche (described below). Your essay should include: A description of your personal habitat and your assigned habitat highlighting the similarities and differences. A description of your personal niche and of your assigned niche highlighting the similarities and differences. Consider what characteristics would provide a survival advantage to you or to the individuals who currently occupy each niche and habitat. How have humans adapted to the two habitats and niches? What difficulties might you have living in the assigned niche and why? What types of cultural adaptations have evolved from living in your niche? Your assigned niche? What are the benefits and challenges of these cultural adaptations? Your discussion should consider any biological adaptations as well; things such as dealing with food spoilage, insect vector control, food and waterborne illnesses, etc. Consider the organism you have been assigned to study in your assigned niche. Would you classify it as a biotic or an abiotic component of the environment? Explain your reasoning by applying the characteristics of life covered in Chapter One.
