Team Leadership ModelThe Hill Model for Team Leadership (Figure 14.1) is based on the functional leadership claim that the leader’s job is to monitor the team and then take whatever action is necessary to ensure team effectiveness. The model provides a tool for understanding the very complex phenomenon of team leadership, starting at the top with its initial leadership decisions, moving to leader actions, and finally focusing on the indicators of team effectiveness. In addition, the model suggests specific actions that leaders can perform to improve team effectiveness. Effective team leaders need a wide repertoire of communication skills to monitor and take appropriate action. The model is designed to simplify and clarify the complex nature of team leadership and to provide an easy tool to aid leadership decision making for team leaders and members alike.Effective team performance begins with how the leader sees the situation that the team is experiencing (the leader’s mental model). This mental model reflects not only the components of the problem confronting the team, but also the environmental and organizational contingencies that define the larger context of team action. The leader develops a mental conception of what the team problem is and what solutions are possible in this context, given the environmental and organizational constraints and resources (Zaccaro et al., 2001).To respond appropriately to the problem envisioned in the mental model, a good team leader needs to be behaviorally flexible and have a wide repertoire of actions or skills to meet the team’s diverse needs (Barge, 1996). When his or her behavior matches the complexity of the situation, the leader is behaving with “requisite variety,” or the set of behaviors necessary to meet the team’s needs (Drecksel, 1991). Effective team leaders are able to construct accurate mental models of the team’s problems by observing team functioning, and can take requisite action to solve these problems. Effective team leaders can diagnose correctly and choose the right action.Figure 14.1 The Hill Model for Team LeadershipThe leader has special responsibility for functioning in a manner that will help the team achieve effectiveness. Within this perspective, leadership behavior is seen as team-based problem solving, in which the leader attempts to achieve team goals by analyzing the internal and external situation and then selecting and implementing the appropriate behaviors to ensure team effectiveness (Fleishman et al., 1991). Leaders must use discretion about which problems need intervention, and make choices about which solutions are the most appropriate (Zaccaro et al., 2001). The appropriate solution varies by circumstance and focuses on what should be done to make the team more effective. Effective leaders have the ability to determine what leadership interventions are needed, if any, to solve team problems. When leadership is shared throughout the team, various members are diagnosing problems and intervening with appropriate behaviors. The monitoring and selection of behaviors is shared throughout the team membership. Given the complexity of team functioning, such shared leadership can—and, in fact, does—lead to greater team effectiveness.Team EffectivenessAt the bottom of the Hill Model for Team Leadership (Figure 14.1) is “Team Effectiveness,” which focuses on team excellence or the desired outcomes of teamwork. Two critical functions of team effectiveness are performance (task accomplishment) and development (team maintenance). Performance refers to the quality of the outcomes of the team’s work. Did the team accomplish its goals and objectives in a quality manner? Development refers to the cohesiveness of the team and the ability of team members to satisfy their own needs while working effectively with other team members (Nadler, 1998). Excellent teams accomplish both of these objectives: getting the job done and maintaining a cohesive team.Scholars have systematically studied organizational work teams and developed standards of effectiveness or criteria of excellence that can be used to assess a team’s health (Hackman, 1990, 2002, 2012; Hughes, Ginnett,

Explainers are essentially a way to communicate to the public an objective understanding of a problem or event based on research rather than an opinion piece. It is longer than a traditional blog post but will be submitted in a similar format to the blog posts described below (about 10- 12 pages of traditional double-spaced text). The “Explainer.”The “Explainer” serves as written culmination of the research you have conducted over thesemester. As the name implies, the idea is to explain a political phenomenon, issue, or concept toreaders in a way that is both sophisticated and accessible to an interested audience that may not havethe deep background on the topic. In terms of format, explainers are a mix of a research paper and academic blog posting. Itshould present a question or argument, provide a summary of the existing scholarly research and how itrelates to your question, include some analysis (likely from your data analysis blog post) and thenconclude with a clear discussion of what we (should) know about the topic and how it relates to thecontemporary world. In other words, it has the same goal as a term paper, but in a more accessiblepresentation. Page expectations are in the 8-10 page range. You will also need to include a referencelist of the 10 scholarly sources (plus other materials). Here are a few links that provide either examples or discussions of explainers. Most will never pay enough federal and state taxes to cover their subsidies. Just looking at the Mexican and South American illegals, La Raza commissioned a report a couple of years ago that found that over 50% of teenage unmarried Hispanic girls had children. Interestingly, LaRaza pulled this study from their web site rather quickly. We also have to educate their children, grand children, and on into the future. Most will never pay enough federal or local taxes to cover the cost of education.Although roughly half (7 million) of the current illegals are working, taking American jobs. If they were legalized or granted citizenship, they would take even more American jobs. Yes, there are some jobs that American will not do because illegals have pushed down wages in those areas, but we should tightly control “legal foreign workers” who want to come here for low wage jobs, make sure they if they have children born on American born, they are not granted automatic citizenship, and force they to leave when their work visas expire.Socially, we are basically lowering our standard of living in the communities where they live. Most illegals have little or no education, some are involved in illegal activities like the drug trade, many will never speak English forcing us into a costly and unwanted multi lingual system like in Canada.. Even now, English as second language students cost more to educate, and in general lower the educational standards in the schools they attend.Politically, if given citizenship, there would be 14 million potential voters immediately and since they would be permitted to bring in close relatives from their countries of origin, along with their children and grand children, the number of potential voters could be 40 to 50 million by mid century. These voters would be looking for candidates that would be willing to provide more and more welfare and services. Former illegals that were given citizenship in past amnesties impacted the last presidential election, and impact many state and local elections. There were several ill conceived illegal aliens amnesties in the past and yet we still have 11 to 15 million illegals here plus their unwanted children and grand children. Finally, it is simply wrong and an affront to American Citizens, American Workers, American Taxpayers, and American Voters, and to legal immigrants, to give citizenship to millions of people who are little more than common criminals. And, let’s not forget that amnesty with the promise of secure borders has been tried before and has been a total failure. We are stuck with the amnestied illegals and the borders are still wide open.Original data is uploaded called blog one democracy. Data from blog one must be induced in this paper.
