In 2013, the City of New York City published The Newest New Yorkers: Characteristics of the City’s Foreign-born Population. It provided a comprehensive portrait of immigrants in New York City by examining where the city’s foreign-born came from, their patterns of settlement, the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the city’s immigrants, and the role of the foreign-born in the New York region. This information is useful to policy-makers, program planners, and service providers. But as New York City’s demography is diverse and constantly changing, you need to estimate the proportion of foreign-born people in New York City (as a percentage of the total NYC population) for 2017. Also, discuss the economic implications of a given social issue on foreign-born people in NYC. Prepare a GROUP report providing all the following information:

• A summary of the issue you selected, that includes the following information:
  1. What the problem is, your key findings on the issue, and the main challenges in your communities
  2. The different perspectives on the issue (focus on economic implications)
  3. How the different news and media outlets present and discuss the issue
  4. Using the data from filename Foreign-born Data, randomly select a sample of 30 neighborhoods (6 from each borough) from the following columns:
• TOTAL POPULATION
• FOREIGN-BORN POP. AS % OF TOT NYC POP.
  5. Set up a table showing explanatory and response variables
  6. Indicate Population and Sample
• 3 – 5 recommendations that will help improve and alleviate the issue in your communities.

1. Be specific, aimed at improving the situation in your different communities, and implementable at a community level
2. Take into account the different challenges surrounding the issue (include economic implications)
3. Help address and engage with the different perspectives in a constructive manner
