Research paper

First Part: Two pages. Start with a brief background to the research question. Then, go on to state the basic research question and provide reasons why this question is worth exploring.

Second Part: Four to six pages or so altogether. Develops the two separate hypotheses that may answer the question. Each hypothesis needs to explain the process involved and the main testable prediction it makes. (See below).

Third Part: a page or two. Discusses the possible implications of the research. It should answer the question: what difference would it make if the research suggests that one rather than the other hypothesis proves to be more truthful?

DETAILS:

Topic: The relationship between South Korea and China in regard to THAAD and Anti-Korea sentiment

Research Question: Will anti-Korean sentiment in China have a longer (or shorter) impact on the relationship between South Korea and China?

Background: “A wave of anti-South Korean sentiment has broken out across China after the South’s embrace of an American missile defense system(THAAD) Washington began shipping in March, 2017 that China says can be used to spy on its territory.” Beijing has retaliated over the Thaad move by ramping up pressure on South Korean companies that have business interests in China and banning Chinese tour groups to South Korea. The purpose of the anti-Korean sentiment is to break down the South Korea’s economy.

Hypotheses 1: The anti-Korean(THAAD) sentiment only has a short-term impact on the relationship between South Korea and China. By short term impact, we indicate that the relationship between SK and China will recover soon.

Hypotheses 2: The anti-Korean(THAAD) sentiment have a longer impact on the relationship between South Korea and China.

Implications and How to test the hypotheses: Take a variety of issues that both types (both ones that have long-lasting effects and those that do not) in China society. Then consider what is it about the longer-lasting issues that is different from the others. This, then, will have the potential to figure out whether the THAAD issue is more like one or the other. (For example, Senkaku Island incident.)
